Multiple sclerosis, or MS for short, is an inflammatory disease in which the fatty myelin sheaths around the axons of the brain and spinal cord are damaged, leading to demyelination and scarring as well as a broad spectrum of symptoms. It impacts the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with one another effectively. When the myelin is lost, the axons are no longer able to effectively conduct signals.

A remarkable photograph of the live birth of a thresher shark has cast light on the lives of these elusive, vulnerable fish.
The image, taken during a research dive in 2013 and now published in the journal Coral Reefs, is believed to be the first record of a birth in this species.
