If You See Your Child Sitting This Way, Stop It Immediately — Here’s Why

Chances are, you’ve seen your child sitting on the floor with their legs behind them, forming a “W.” It’s comfortable, convenient, and very common. But if you see them on the floor this way, you should stop them immediately.

The “W” position, where children sit on their bottoms with their knees out in front of them and feet tucked under, has a negative impact on a child’s development and growth pattern. While it may seem like they’re comfortable and supported, it puts undue stress on hip abductors, hamstrings, internal rotators, and heel cords. Too much time lounging like this could end in a visit to the orthopedic office and balance issues. The pressure put on these parts of the body are what causes kids to walk and stand “pigeon-toed,” and it eventually leads to discomfort and odd contortions of the back and pelvis. This position is known to lead to delays in hand dominance, skipping, throwing, and kicking.
